SEATTLE KRAKEN

Client - The Rockwell Group

Role - Motion designer

Medium - Large flip disc display, Motion graphics

Location - Seattle WA, 2021

THE BRIEF:

Conceptualize a graphic language for a low resolution large display in a hockey arena. My role was to design and animate choreographed spectacles synced to live stadium events, scoreboards & highlights for every game-day moment & update. Display advertising messages impactfully and legibly. Previz the Ambient Mode, Call to action, & the Interactive Mode.

BACKGROUND:

At Seattle’s newly-renovated Climate Pledge Arena, you can now feel the game-day energy rushing across the walls. We’ve created two 35ft flip-disc displays that highlight every stadium event & game-day moment with striking animations that ignite across the walls.

DESIGNING THE SYSTEM:

Designing templates and motion studies for this project was an interesting challenge. A flip disc display only has two colors, and doesn’t refresh the same way most displays do. They are much lower resolution than a large LED wall would have been. This made displaying text a challenge. Type at scale had to be thoroughly tested.

INTERACTIVE:

The installations react to your presence as you pass by, inviting you to reshape the visual displays and hear the surge of 98,000 discs reshuffling as you head towards the stadium action
